Not only that towns and cities are growing at exceedingly rapid pace, but also the internal structure of Chinese cities is undergoing massive change. This subject introduces students to the recent literature on this immense transformation process. The subject is divided into two parts. Part A is on the urbanization process. It will deal with questions such as the definition problem, the debate on the city size hierarchy, the question of hukou and rural to urban migration. Part B is on China’s urban housing and urban land use. Analysis of China’s emerging urban housing markets and changing land use structure will be studied from various theoretical and methodological perspectives. Part A The Urbanization Process I.
