Honours Project
The Department trains students' independent study skills through the mandatory Honours Project requirement. The Honors Project enables students to complete a piece of significant, independent study on a geographic topic of their choice under the supervision of a faculty member in the Department. Many previous projects have been close to publishable standards, and some have subsequently been jointly published with their supervisors in journals or book chapters.
For the Geography Major (i.e. BSS (Hons) Geography) students, the Honours Project carries 6 credit units and must be written in English. The topic selection for the project will take place towards the end of the second year of study, under the guidance of the Chief Adviser. The project should be based on the analysis of a problem through fieldwork or through the analysis of secondary data. The project should demonstrate that students have developed geographical field, practical and analytical skills within the context of the chosen research topic.
For BSS (Hons) China Studies-Geography Option students, the project carries 3 units. Topic selection will take place towards the end of the first semester in Year 3 under the guidance of the Chief Adviser. The project must be on an aspect of China. It can be written in either English or Chinese, which is to be determined by the student in consultation with the Chief Adviser.
