Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Geography

¡@

The BSocSc (Hons) in Geography course enables students to obtain a firm foundation in geographical methodology while at the same time acquiring an understanding of the spatial order and the interdependence of the world's peoples and regions. Emphasis is placed on the ways in which geographers may assist in finding solutions to real world problems. Students are offered considerable freedom to take a broad spectrum of subjects, particularly in their second and final years, when they may choose to concentrate on aspects of either physical or human geography.
¡@
Specifically, the course aims to provide students with:
¡@
1. Knowledge of the spatial order and the interdependence of different regions of the world;
2. A critical understanding of environmental and socio-economic development problems with a focus on global-local connections;
3. The ability to apply geographical techniques and methods in the analysis and interpretation of diverse people-environmental interactions;
4. The preparation that allows students to pursue postgraduate studies in geography and related fields, and to take up a variety of jobs in business, civil service, education and other professional endeavours.
¡@
The structure of the curriculum is as follows:
¡@
Major Courses 60 units
¡@ Complementary Studies Courses 36 units
¡@ ¡@
¡@ ¡@ 96 units
¡@
1.   Major Courses (60 units)

The Honours Project enables students to complete a piece of significant, independent study on a geographical topic of their choice under supervision of a faculty member. Moreover, all geography students must participate in the mandatory Field Camp of the Department, which is conducted during the second semester of Year II.

¡@
2.  Complementary Studies Courses (36 units)

Complementary Studies courses enable students to acquire an understanding of the broader world, and a variety of issues and values, so that they are better able to cope with the challenges of the complex socio-economic, cultural, religious and political aspects of modern life.
