HKBU Distinguished Geography Seminar (5 May 2022)
10 May 2022
The second event in the Department's recently launched Distinguished Geography Seminar series took place on Thursday, 5 May, with Prof. Haeran Shin from Seoul National University as the invited guest speaker. Prof. Shin, a political geographer, presented new work entitled "Urban place-making through national agenda-setting: Urban regeneration as a presidential election promise in South Korea." This research considers the ways in which urban politics are influenced by national-scale agenda-setting surrounding the presidential election. Using theories of power and agenda-setting, this work contributes to debates in urban policy studies and shows the processes that precede the creation of urban regeneration initiatives. A lively discussion took place in the question and answer period. The talk was well-attended by colleagues, studies and friends of the department from around the world.
