Our colleague, Dr. Meng Gao and collaborators from four universities received the Young Collaborative Research Grant (YCRG) of over HK$3.5 million in the Hong Kong Research Grant Council’s Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2022/23 Exercise.

The project entitled “Climate- and environment-conscious urban growth in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA): solutions and co-benefits” will be led by Hong Kong Baptist University. Collaborating Universities include the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Sun Yat-sen University and the University of Hong Kong.

Concentrated human activities in cities emit heat, air pollutants and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, resulting in serious urban heat and air pollution issues and posing great threats to human health. Considering the lack of dialogues between planners and scientists, this project proposes a proactive approach to push joint efforts for sustainable living. It aims to obtain a thoughtful spatial arrangement of land types, which could benefit urban heat, air quality and human health. The results would offer valuable implications for the development of the Greater Bay Area and contribute to the achievement of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.
