Undergraduate Programmes

The Department of Geography offers three undergraduate programmes:

BSocSc (Hons) in Geography provides a broad-based training of the discipline that allows students to have a balanced view of the contemporary world.

BSocSc (Hons) in China Studies – Geography Concentration focuses on the study of China from a geographical perspective that enables students to analyze in-depth the complexities of geography in contemporary China.

BSocSc (Hons) in Geography and BEd (Hons) in Liberal Studies Teaching leads to the award of two Honours degrees, i.e. Geography and Liberal Studies Teaching.

Admission Requirements

Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Geography

With the implementation of four-year undergraduate degree programmes in 2012, the Faculty of Social Sciences has introduced a joint admission practice for four Majors, namely Geography, Government & International Studies, History and Sociology. Under the new admission practice, students will be admitted to the Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Social Sciences (Geography/ Government & International Studies/ History/ Sociology) (JS2610) and provided with a broad-based social sciences training in their first year with no specific Majors. Upon the completion of the first year of study, students may apply to take “Geography” as their Major and enroll into the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Geography programme based on individual interest and academic performance.

Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in China Studies – Geography Concentration

Students are admitted to the China Studies Programme (JS 2650) without a specific discipline option and have a common foundation curriculum in the first year. At the end of the first year, they will be allowed to choose and join one discipline option through an internal competitive application procedure. Upon graduation, students receive the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in China Studies with one of the four discipline options (Economics, History, Geography, or Sociology).

Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Geography and Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Liberal Studies Teaching

Each of the three double degrees is a five-year full-time programme leading to two degree awards. Each programme is jointly offered by the Departments of Education Studies, Geography, History, and Sociology, and prepares students in two distinct disciplines. Students who successfully complete the programme will hold a recognised teaching qualification for schools in Hong Kong . At the end of the first year, students will be allowed to choose and join one of the three disciplines (Geography & Liberal Studies Teaching; History & Liberal Studies Teaching; Sociology & Liberal Studies Teaching) through an internal competitive application procedure.

For Direct (Non-JUPAS) Applicants

Direct (Non-JUPAS) applicants applying to the programme are expected to have a Chinese language qualification as deemed acceptable by the University.
