The Department of Geography successfully hosted a Distinguished Geography Seminar on Thursday, 15 October 2026, featuring Prof. József Benedek.
In his talk, “Regional Development between Convergence and Polarisation: Multidimensional Perspectives from Romania,” Prof. Benedek examined Romania’s development paradox: while the country has caught up economically with the European Union, regional disparities have continued to widen. Drawing on multidimensional indicators and spatial analysis, he explored patterns of convergence, the clustering of income inequality, and Cluj’s rapid growth alongside its fragmented spatial development.
Students listened attentively and actively participated in the discussion, raising thoughtful questions and engaging Prof. Benedek in lively exchanges. The seminar highlighted the importance of place-based policies and finer-scale analysis in promoting regional cohesion and spatial justice.
The Department thanks Prof. Benedek for his insightful presentation and all those who attended and contributed to the discussion.
