The Geography Department is proud of its ability to maintain strong links with its alumni. The intimate nature of this relationship was demonstrated by the very large turnout of our graduates for the Millennium Gathering of the BU geographers in the year 2000. Our former students also attended a number of important recent events in large numbers: the Alumni Christmas Reunion Dinner cum Fundraising Campaign (2003); the Alumni Dinner Gala (2006) in celebration of Prof. Li Si Ming’s promotion to the Geography Chair Professorship; the 30th Anniversary Homecoming cum Gala Dinner (2008); the House Warming cum 35th Anniversary Homecoming Party (2013) and the Geography Fun Day and Alumni Reunion Dinner (2016). Our graduates have also been generous in helping the department with financial contributions. Notably, a 1964 graduate of the then History and Geography Department has made two significant donations (amounting to HK$400,000 in total) to set up the Elizabeth Chan Cheng E-lay Geography Academic Lecture Fund. This fund allows the Department to invite world-renowned geographers to deliver public lecturers on a diverse range of geographical themes. The Department is most appreciative of the generous support given by our alumni during two previous fundraising rounds that were matched by government grants. Their contributions have supported the “Geography Development Fund”, which assists teaching (including field camps) and research activities, and also the “Geography Student Academic Exchange Sponsorship Fund”, which helps needy students to participate in exchange programs and overseas study trips. Moreover, our alumni have also taken several independent initiatives to set up scholarship funds that award outstanding geography students for their scholastic achievement or services to our academic community, including:
HKBU Geography Alumni Scholarship
Mrs Leung Tong Pom-sum Memorial Scholarship
Wong May Wai Esther Scholarship for Outstanding Geography Students
“The scholarships shall be awarded to geography students, subject to availability of funds.”
