The Hong Kong team wins the 2022 International Geography Olympiad
The 18th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo 2022) was held online in Paris, France, from the 12th to 18th of July, with 54 teams around the globe participating. The Hong Kong team continued its success from the previous competition, remarkably winning 1 gold and 3 bronze medals in iGeo 2022. Winners included Wong Ching-hang and Lam Kwan-yun from Ying Wa College, Wan Ching-tung from St. Stephen’s Girls’ College, and Tsao Chun-kit from Carmel Secondary School. Overall, the Hong Kong team finished 9th in the world out of 54 competing teams. The Department of Geography of Hong Kong Baptist University supported the team by providing our well-equipped Geoinformatics Laboratory as the venue for joining the online competition. The Department would also like to extend sincere congratulations to all the participants for their outstanding achievements.
The Hong Kong Geographical Association (HKGA), which was established 53 years ago, is devoted to promoting geography education, teaching and research in academia in the territory. To this end, HKGA organizes Hong Kong Geography Olympiad annually and selects and trains contestants for a Hong Kong team to enter the International Geography Olympiad. For iGeo 2022, HKGA formulated a set of training classes and activities for contestants with the guidance of experts and teachers from various geographical fields and logistics support from the Department of Geography. It helped enhance their understanding of European geography and develop practical skills in virtual fieldwork.
