Department of Geography Warmly Welcomes New PhD Students of AY26/27

The Department of Geography welcomed its new PhD students at the PhD Welcome Event and Orientation Briefing held on 3 September 2026 from 14:00 to 16:00. The event brought together faculty members, current PhD students, and departmental colleagues to introduce the Department and help new students begin their doctoral studies.
The programme started with a welcome address by our Department Chair, Prof. Kevin LO, who introduced the Department and its research community. This was followed by a session led by RPg Research Coordinator, Prof. LYU Xiaopu, who provided an overview of programme requirements and important information for PhD students. New students also received a briefing on course registration, administrative procedures, and useful departmental resources.
One of the highlights of the event was the research-sharing session. Mr. HONG Pu, recipient of the Faculty Outstanding Publication Award, and Mr. Ibrahim UMAR, recipient of the Department Outstanding Publication Award, shared their research experiences and academic journeys. Their presentations gave new students useful insights into conducting research and pursuing their doctoral studies.
The event concluded with a Research Mingle Session, where new and current PhD students, faculty members, and colleagues had the opportunity to meet and interact. The session encouraged participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build connections within the Department.
The Department hopes that the event helped new students become familiar with their academic environment and feel welcomed as members of the Geography community. The Department looks forward to supporting them throughout their PhD journey and wishes them every success in their studies and research.

Prof. LYU Xiaopu, RPg Research Coordinator, introduced programme requirements and shared important information on studentships, awards, and the study timeline for PhD students.
Mr. HONG Pu, recipient of the Faculty Outstanding Publication Award, presented his research on shale gas, publication experience as a PhD student in publish top-tier journals in Joule, Environmental Science & Technology and Nature Communications, and shared his experiences as a PhD student at HKBU.
Mr. Ibrahim UMAR, recipient of the Department Outstanding Publication Award, presented his research on Chinese EV battery investment in Morocco and discussed its impacts on government policies and development in Africa.
