Distinguished Geography Seminar: Prof. Andy Pike Illuminates Financialisation’s Effects on Local Government

23 April 2026

The Department of Geography was pleased to host Professor Andy Pike, Henry Daysh Professor of Regional Development Studies at Newcastle University, for a seminar held on April 23. Prof. Pike presented a compelling analysis of how financialisation is reshaping the landscape of local government in the UK and beyond. By introducing a new theory of local statecraft, he examined the changing objectives, incentives, and responsibilities of local governance amid growing financial pressures.

During his talk, Prof. Pike highlighted how financial mechanisms are increasingly influencing the autonomy and accountability of municipal authorities, thereby exposing local governments to more complex risks. He illustrated these shifts through case studies and vivid examples from both urban and regional contexts, helping participants appreciate the far-reaching implications for policymaking and urban development.

A lively Q&A session followed, with students and faculty members raising thoughtful questions and sharing their perspectives. The seminar became a platform for vibrant academic exchange, encouraging deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing local governments in a financialised world. The Department extends its sincere appreciation to Prof. Pike for his enriching presentation and active engagement with our academic community.
