15 Dec 2025

The Department of Geography successfully hosted a distinguished seminar on December 15, featuring Professor Matthew Zook from the University of Kentucky. The event attracted a full house of enthusiastic students, all eager to engage with Prof. Zook’s thought-provoking talk, “The Silicon Gaze: A typology of biases and inequality in LLMs through the lens of place.” Prof. Zook skillfully explored how large language models reproduce spatial inequalities, combining deep academic insight with humor and clarity that captivated the audience throughout.

After the presentation, the atmosphere was lively as students and faculty alike engaged in vibrant discussions, challenging ideas and exchanging perspectives on the impact of AI on geographic research and society. The seminar not only deepened participants’ understanding of generative AI and spatial bias, but also fostered critical dialogue within our academic community. We extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Zook for his inspiring talk and to everyone who contributed to the seminar’s success.
