On May 12, the Department of Geography had the privilege of hosting Professor Ming Xu, Chair Professor of Carbon Neutrality at Tsinghua University, for an engaging seminar. Prof. Xu introduced the TianGong Initiative, a nationwide project focused on building a robust life cycle assessment (LCA) data infrastructure through collaborative community efforts and AI-driven workflows. His presentation underscored the significance of reliable data systems for carbon management, green manufacturing, and effective sustainability policy.
Prof. Xu elaborated on how interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation enable the collection and analysis of comprehensive environmental data. He discussed both the opportunities and the challenges encountered during the development of China’s LCA infrastructure, citing examples that highlighted the project’s real-world impact on industry and policymaking.
The seminar concluded with an active discussion session, where faculty and students exchanged insightful questions and views with Prof. Xu. His visit fostered a meaningful academic dialogue, broadening participants’ understanding of the dynamic intersection between data, sustainability, and policy.
