HGDG1@HKBU - Brings Distinguished Editors and Authors Together: Tips for Submitting Top-tier Journals and Book Publishing

The Department of Geography hosted the first Human Geography Discussion Group (HGDG1) of AY2026/27, featuring a special session on Academic Publications and Research Impact on 10 September 2026 at WYS1217 (AAB1217), Hong Kong Baptist University. The event brought together faculty members, researchers, and postgraduate students in the field of human geography from CUHK, HKU, and HKBU to discuss journal publishing, book publishing, and the broader challenges and opportunities in academic research dissemination.

The session featured distinguished scholars who shared their experiences as journal editors and authors. Prof. Henry YEUNG (GRM, CUHK) provided an editor's perspective on publishing in leading journals, including Environment and Planning A and Economic Geography. Prof. YANG Chun (GEOG, HKBU) shared her experiences as Co-Editor of Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society and offered practical advice on academic publishing. Participants also heard from Prof. Jun WANG (Public and International Affairs, CityUHK), Senior Associate Editor of Journal of Urban Affairs, and Prof. Creighton CONNOLLY (Architecture, HKU), Co-Editor of Urban Studies, who discussed editorial processes and expectations for journal submissions.

In addition to journal publishing, Prof. Wesley ATTEWELL (GEOG, HKU) shared his insights on book publishing and discussed the importance of academic books in advancing scholarly knowledge and reaching broader audiences.

The event attracted strong interest from PhD students from different departments and universities, who took the opportunity to engage directly with journal editors and experienced scholars. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including publication strategies, peer review, research quality, book publishing, and the changing landscape of academic outputs.
